LOST: A BABY

We have lost a baby with windblown hair!

Oh, if someone out in the world somewhere,

Should see our lost baby-her eyes are blue,

And she'll stop to show you the slipper-shoe

On each little foot-won't you let us know?

For she is our baby-we love her so!

You can keep her, maybe, if you will tell

Her a fairy tale, for she loves them well.

Did we say each knuckle is dimpled? She

Is bubbling and crowing with baby glee,

There are big pink bows on her yellow hair,

And she wears white socks, and her knees are bare-

Just the roundest knees!-And the neck is low

Of her little dress-and-we miss her so!

Our laps are so empty! Our hearts so sad!

And she meant so much! Made our lives so glad!

A tall girl has come to take baby's place ;

Such a sweet, dear girl, with a serious face ;

And her hair is a golden glory, too,

And her cheeks are dimpled, her eyes are blue

As the baby's eyes, and she knows each song

That our baby knew-but her skirts are long;

Though it seems sometimes we can almost see

Our baby peep out of her eyes in glee.

And we want to keep her-We love her, too!

But we want our little, glad babe, we do;

Oh, anyone, anywhere, if you know

The path which goes to the long ago,

Find our baby for us! We know she's there,

With the ribbon-bows on her yellow hair ,

With a clover-bloom in her dimpled fist-

We cannot go back for the babe we've missed.
