JUBILEE'S PARDNER.
Tuesday, and today was bright and bammy after
a big night. My father and unkle had went to a meeting of the union last night
and I was sent to bed, and after I had went to sleep my mother hollered and
woke me up, and I went down- stairs in my shirttail and my mother said Angela's
mother had foamed and said Angela's father was out of town and was my father
and unkle home, and when my mother said they wasn't she asted if I could come
over for a little while and to come around to the back door, so I went up and
slammed myself back in my short britches and let Jubilee down and went down and
we skun out, and when I got to their back door it opened for me and Angela and
her mother and the teacher was there, and he mother put her fingers on her lips
to make me keep still, and then she whispered that someone was walking around
in their front room, and I listened and heard it as plain as anything, and then
she tol me to sneak out to the garage and get Diabetes and if he wasn't there
to get Nashturshum, so I snuck out and only Nashturshum was there and I brung
her back with me, and Angela's mother had got a big pistol somewheres, and we
went and listened at the door of the front room and we could hear the footsteps,
and Angela's mother said, "Nashturshum, I am going to open the door and
when I do you go right in there and ast whoever is there what they are doing
there," and Nashturshum said, "Yassum, Ah'll go in all right,"
and she reached under her dress and got something out of her stocking and
touched a spring and a knife blade as long as a sword popped out, and Angela's
mother said "Are you ready?” and Nashturshum said, "Yassum, Ah's
ready. Ah ain' skeered of whatever's in there, but Ah sure is skeered of having
you behind me with that cannon," but Angela's mother pushed the door open
and Nashturshum went in and made a light and no one was there. The front window
was open and the wind was blowing the curtains and the curtains had weights on
the bottom to make them hang straight and when the wind would blow them out
"they would bump back against the wall and sound like footsteps, and
Angela's mother sot down on the davenport like she was going to faint and I got
her a drink, and I asted her why she didn't foam the police, and she said,
"Gracious: How silly of me. I never thought of it. Then she said,
“Nashturshum, what were you doing with that offal knife in your stocking?"
and Nasturshum said she was dressed up to go to a party but her boy friend had
stood her up. When I got home my folks was up and I had to tell them all about
it. I am glad it wasn't a burgdlar, unless it was a little one. Nothing
happened today except Red and String had a fight, and if a man hadn't separated
them String would have licked. I am going to ast Angela's mother if she will
give me that pistol when she don't want it any more, and then when anyone calls
me out at night to save their lives I can take it with me.
